Macclesfield assistant manager Gary Simpson has asked for fans to be patient as they try and build a squad.

Speaking to the club’s official website at www.mtfc.co.uk he said:

‘First and foremost the critisism is part and parcel of the game. And I am the first to defend the right of anyone to have a moan. You pays your money and you takes your choice. But what I think is often forgotten is that we’ve a very young squad. There are players in the team who will have never experienced things like being booed. It started as early as the fifth minute on Saturday when Shaun Brisley was on the receiving end. That’s disappointing. He’s a local lad, learning his trade and someone who always gives 100%. He, and players of similar age, need encouragement more than anything. Get on his back as early as the fifth minute surely can’t have helped.’

‘I know that is easy to say. By all means have a go at Keith and myself but getting on the players backs so early can’t really help. We’re all working for the same thing here. And that’s to see Macc win games of football.’

‘Of course we understand the frustrations. And we’re working hard to try and get things right. We’d all like to be a lot higher in the league especially given we have shown in patches that we can compete. We’re just not doing it often enough. Expectation, and with that pressure, in football is so much higher these days. But I think we can certainly point to progress in a league where we know most other teams have call on greater resources.’

What I do know is that it’s a fact of life that as one of the smaller clubs in League Two we are never going to be one of the league’s biggest spenders. The likes of Bradford are paying their players far in excess of what we could ever hope to afford. As a result they have better players. That’s not having a go at our players or the club. It simply is a fact of life.

And that’s why in recent years the teams at the top of the table are by and large those with the money to spend. The likes of Darlington have tried to compete and look what has happened to them. Financially it would be irresponsible. We have therefore try and make the best of what we have.

And that is a good crop of young players at the club and that is a big asset. The likes of John Rooney did well on Saturday, especially when he moved out wide. We’ve also Shaun, Jordan, Ricky, Flynny and JJ plus several others.’
