Macclesfield Town have appointed Paul Ince as their new manager on a 14 month deal.

Although this is Ince`s first management role, his playing record speaks for itself.

Beginning his playing career with West Ham, he broke through to the first team and made 72 League appearances for the Hammers. He also collected England U21 caps in this time. He made a further 23 cup appearances scoring a total of 12 League and Cup goals.

This prompted Manchester United to sign him for £1,000,000 in 1989 where he had his best known and most successful period in his career.

During his 281 appearances over six years for the Old Trafford side he won the Premier League twice, the FA Cup twice, the League Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup, scoring 28 goals along the way. He also played for and captained England`s senior side.

He was sold to Inter Milan in 1995 for £7m and won over their fans during his first season. That summer he played an important part in England reaching the Euro 96 semi-finals before losing on penalties to Germany.

His second season at Inter saw him reach the UEFA Cup final, but although Inter wanted to retain the popular player, he wanted to return to England and signed for Liverpool for £4.2m.

He retained his England place and was heavily involved in qualification for the 1998 World Cup, famously finishing the 0-0 draw with Italy which clinched the appearance in the finals in a bloodstained shirt and head bandage.

Although Liverpool failed to win a trophy during his two years at the club, he hit a landmark with his 40th England appearance before moving to Middlesbrough for £1m in 1999.

He remained in the England squad and helped them qualify for the 2000 European Championships and played in all three of the games of that ill-fated tournament, winning his 50th cap in a warm-up friendly against Malta. He retired from international football with 53 caps after that tournament.

With Boro he played 106 games including both of their League Cup matches against the Silkmen.

In 2002 he moved to Wolves and helped them achieve promotion to the Premier League in his first season but they were relegated after one year.

Ince remained with Wolves for a further two years, playing 18 Championship games for them last season as they finished one place outside the play-offs before joining Swindon in the summer.

As well as wanting to keep him on as a player, Ince was amongst the fan`s favourites for the vacant managers job at Molineux

He has played three times for Swindon, where he was a player/coach, this season before leaving the club citing the commute from the North West as a main reason.
