Who Are We?

With the first pre-season game approaching we take a look at the squad for the coming campaign.

There are still two as yet unnamed trialists who may join the Silkmen as well as another unnamed player, a Premiership loan striker.

1 – Jonathan Brain – GK

Former Carlisle trainee who moved on to Newcastle then Port Vale. Played more than 60 games for Vale despite his young age. Likely to start the season as backup to Tommy Lee.

Career Games in all competitions: 68 (1 as sub)

2 – Carl Regan – Right back/Utility

An Everton youth player who moved to Barnsley and played 40 Championship games. He spent time on loan at Hull before signing for them, playing almost 50 games. Did the same with Chester City and was an almost ever present for them last season. There have been ‘mixed` reports from Chester fans saying that he started well and tailed off last season but should be given a fair chance to impress by the Macclesfield support.

3 – Andrew Smart – Left back/left midfield

A product of the Macclesfield youth system who can play left back or left midfield. Has a powerful shot and scored a great goal against Carlisle in the LDV. Also scored twice in the Silkmen`s ‘Allstar` game.

4 – David Morley – Centre back (but has played midfield and up front!)

A former Manchester City youngster who has also played for Ayr United, Southend, Carlisle, Oxford and Doncaster Rovers. Arrived at Macclesfield as one of the trio who helped push us into the play-offs in 2005. Made club captain the following season but didn`t do quite so well in a back two.

5 – Danny Swailes – Centre back

Bury stalwart who became the club record signing for 40k at the same time as Dave Morley. Solid at the back.

Career Games: 242 (18) Goals: 16

6 – Martin Bullock – Atacking midfielder/winger

Arguably the best player at the club. Played in the Premier League with Barnsley and has since played for Port Vale and Blackpool. Quick, skillful, great engine. When on form he gets fans on their feet and leaves full backs on their backsides. Teams often have to double man-mark him. Scored 6 goals for Macc last season which was his best individual total.

7 – Alan Navarro – Defensive midfield

Started at Liverpool and has been on the bench in Europe. Loaned to Crewe before signing for Tranmere for 225k. Moved to Macc on loan at the same time as Swailes and Morley. Left the club and returned the following season after a short stint with Accrington.

8 – Colin Heath – Attacking midfield/striker

Manchester United trainee and scored a few for their reserves. Loans to Cambridge and Swindon preceeded signing for Chesterfield where he didn`t get much of a chance.

Career Games: 17 (7) Goals 1

9 – Matthew McNeil – Striker

Liverpool trainee but fell out of the League. Played in non-League for Runcorn and Stalybridge before being picked up by Hyde where he was the best player at the club. Bought by Macc last season. ‘Good feet for a big lad`, strong and quick

Pro Career Games: 13 Goals: 2

10 – John Miles – Striker/Attacking midfielder

The club`s current longest serving player! Formerly a Liverpool trainee who moved on to Crewe where he made a handful of sub appearances scoring once. Signed for Macc on deadline day of 2003 amd saved the club from relegation. Has since dipped in and out of the squad. His strengths lie with his pace, his skill with the ball at his feet and flashes of brilliance. But he needs to be a bit more consistent. Has also played as an attacking midfielder as cover for Martin Bullock.

12 – Marvin Robinson – Striker

Started at Derby where he played and scored in the Premier League. Since then he has played for seven clubs, including Stoke and Tranmere, on a variety of long and short term loans and signings before signing at Lincoln. Was the Imps top scorer last season as they hit the play-offs.

13 – Tommy Lee – GK

Man United ‘keeper who played ahead of Tim Howard in their Reserves last season. Loaned to Macc and impressed in his three months. Excellent shotstopper who is learning fast.

14 – Kevin McIntyre – Midfield

A Tranmere trainee who moved to Doncaster and then on to Chester before arriving at Macc in the play-off season. A competitive midfielder who can score the odd goal.

15 – Ian Brightwell – Utility

Man City stalwart. Moved on to Coventry, Walsall, Stoke and Port Vale. A coach who is only registered for emergencies but showed over the last two years that he can still fill a gap.

Career Games: 486 (57) Goals: 19

16 – Izak Reid – Attacking midfield

First year professional. Small but pacy attacking midfielder who has yet to make his debut.

Career Games: 0 Goals: 0

17 – Jordan Hadfield – Midfield

Promising central midfielder. Signed from Stockport where he played once against MK Dons in 2005.

Career Games: 1 Goals: 0

18 – Andrew Teague – Central defender

Central defender who came through the ranks at Macc. Looked composed and comfortable in his 34 games last season as he played both at centre and right back.

19 – James Jennings – Right back

First year pro who is yet to make his senior debut.

Career Games: 0 Goals: 0

20 – Marvin McDonald – Striker

Unused sub once last season. Never played but quick and strong despite his small stature.
