After the Crewe defeat an unrepentant eternal optimist, realist & raconteur continued to back his crazy gang.

‘With the millions they have spent on their Academy and the effort they put into bringing players through, they are bound to have some very good individuals. But I didn’t feel we were struggling to keep in the game.”

On a defence where we are on the verge of putting out cardboard cut outs.

‘We’ve got real problems in defence. Izak Reid is out with a groin strain, Carl Tremarco has got a strain in his stomach, while we’ve lost Shaun Brisley for four months. In an ideal world I would have liked to have rested Paul Morgan and Nat Brown, but with our defence at the moment I just can’t do that. We’ve got no money to spend so I’ve gone out with my begging bowl and we’ll see what we can do this week. In the next two to three days I feel I’ve got to bring in one or two players.’

With us now concentrating on the League – until the FA Cup comes along – the gaffer also hedged his bets.

‘I wanted to win. It’s a local derby and we want to progress in all competitions, but if in the long run it is perceived that we’ve benefited from not going through then so be it.’
