Macclesfield Town have former Darlington ‘keeper Sam Russell on trial.

Russell was released by Darlo in the summer after the 24 year old had made almost 120 appearances in three years.

The player came through the ranks at Middlesbrough , but failed to make a senior appearance. He had a brief loan spell with Darlington in 2002, where he made just one appearance.

The following year he had a loan at Scunthorpe . But he was released by Boro in 2004 and moved to Darlington where he made the No 1 shirt his own. He made 50 appearances in his first season as an ever-present in League matches.

A mid season injury in 2005/2006 restricted his appearances to 32, and had a similar time the following year when he played 35 times either side of an injury gap.

He was offered a deal by Darlo in the summer, but turned it down to look elsewhere.
