Macclesfield Town are reportedly looking at two former Crewe players as they look towards the new season.

Midfielder Gareth Whalley is currently training with Alex, but has attracted the eye of new boss Ian Brightwell. Whalley has played for Crewe, Bradford, Wigan and Swindon. He featured eight times for Wigan as they finished second in the Championship in 2004.

Meanwhile forward Lee Matthews is said to be training with the club in a bid to earn a deal.

Matthews began his career at Leeds where he played three Premier League games and has been on loan several times in his career. His one money signing was a £100,000 move to Bristol City where he scored eight in 14 starts plus 28 appearances from the bench and a further three in the cups.

After more loan spells he moved to Port Vale and hit 10 in 21 starts and 13 from the bench before his move to Crewe. An injury hit season meant he only managed 10 appearances from the bench.
