Wayne Rooney scored on his Moss Rose debut and Danny Swailes netted for the Silkmen.

Fraizer Campbell scored the winner for United.

Tommy Lee started the game for the Silkmen and earned early brownie points with a great one-on-one save from Wayne Rooney.

But the Silkmen also had chances as Martin Bullock stung the hands of Edwin van der Sar, as did Alan Navarro.

Tommy Lee was on form just before half time as he somehow clawed a Paul McShane header away from close range.

But United scored just after half time as Rooney was somewhat fortunate to see his deflection from a Ritchie Jones strike creep past Jonny Brain.

Macc were level minutes later as United failed to clear a corner. Rio Ferdinand and co. giving Danny Swailes plenty of time to pick his spot.

Both sides had long range shots saved, with John Miles striking the Silkmen’s, before Macc made their first raft of substitutions over the next few minutes.

John Miles went off for Jordan Hadfield, Bullock for an unnamed trialist, believed to be from Aston Villa, Robinson for Heath and McNulty for Teague.

The visitors then scored what would turn out to be the winner. Fraizer Campbell doing well to turn in a free kick from the left.

Jonny Brain did excellently to parry a powerful long drive.

The Silkmen finished the game strongly and Dave Morley and Danny Swiles both went close from corners. Colin Heath also shot just wide.

Macclesfield: Lee (Brain), Regan, McNulty (Teague), Swailes, Morley, McIntyre, Navarro (Ried), Miles (Hadfield), Bullock (Trialist), McNeil, Robinson (Heath).
