Tyrone Barnett slipped through the net at West Bromwich Albion, but having been given a second chance he is relishing the chance to add to his goal tally against Stockport County on Saturday after another promising performance against Morecambe.
The strong powerful lad is another of Gary Simpson`s famous spots, plucking the lad from Hednesford in the summer. Thus far he is starting to repay the faith of a man who has made Peterborough a fortune (and rising) from non League gems.
Tyrone ‘wants it`, which is perhaps typical for someoneone who has felt rejection, part and parcel of the sharp end of football. WBA gave him the bad news at the end of his scholarship as he failed to earn a pro contract. Rushall took a punt and reaped the reward as he made a sensational start to the 06/07 season with 9 goals in the first 16 games.
Telford United moved for him only to cast the unpolished gem to one side for the second time in his short young career. Tyrone left at the end of the season for Willenhall Town where he hammered home his credentials with 22 goals the following season.
Hednesford Town jumped in and gave him a two year deal. The security and faith worked as Tyrone tore through the Southern League Premier with 28 goals as the club won the Birmingham Senior Cup for the first time in their history with a 2-0 win over Stourbridge. Last year he bagged another 26 goals as Simmo came to call. Talkative ex team mate Ross Draper doubtless put a penny`s worth in as the Silkmen offered a year plus an option of a second.
After an impressive scoring debut at Stevenage Simmo moved to secure a second year, mindful that the lad needs that security and arm to rely on. The small matter that the vultures will soon be circling, once he gets his shooting boots on, was also clearly a factor.
Gaffer Gary Simpson said at the time: ‘When we signed him for free, because he’s over 24, we gave him one year with an option for a second, and have decided to take that up now rather than waiting on it and running the risk of losing him in the summer.’
He added: ‘He’s done very well in pre-season and is already off the mark. What we have been trying to do is tie down the players who will be assets to the club in the future. We’re trying to build something here and these players want to be part of it and to learn with the club. It’s certainly beneficial for both us and the player to have that extra security.’
Tyrone is set to repay a bit more of that Simmo faith in the derby on Saturday and wants to be part of a Macclesfield miracle. Hopefully we will get to see the best of him before he doubtless moves for a fee. But then you feel Simmo already has these scenarios in mind
