The Silkmen all-but ended their relegation worries with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Chester City.

Two stunning goals from John Rooney and Gareth Evans did the damege in the first half, but both sides could have added to the scoreline.

John ‘better than Wayne’ Rooney opened the scoring after just eight minutes. A Lee Bell free-kick was deflected to the edge of the area and Rooney hit a perfect, low volley into the bottom right corner.

The nerves were still evident, but it was the Silkmen who were clearly on top.

Gareth Evans had a great chance to score when he was played in down the right, beat his marker for pace and hit a low drive which was saved by Spencer in the Chester goal. The home side’s hearts were in their mouths as he spilled the ball with Rooney closing in, but the ‘keeper managed to get there first.

But Evans didn’t have long to wait and a carbon-copy move down the right saw the second goal. this time he had no intention of seeing the ‘keeper make a save, and blasted the ball into the roof of the net.

The second half was a more cagey affair as the Silkmen either seemed happy to defend a two goal lead or to conserve energy for Monday, but there were still chances.

Junior Daniel twice found himself in space in the box, but couldn’t pull the trigger whilst Nat Brown hit the ball just wide from a Bell cross.

At the other end, Danny Thomas, Lee Bell and Nat Brown all made inch-perfect last-ditch tackles to prevent Chester getting back into the match.

Great win lads, the pressure is now easing, good to see you have turned recent form around.

Well done Macc! Chester may well be going back to the non-league game where they belong.
