Macclesfield Town are reported to be on the verge of signing Lee Bell, who was with Mansfield last season.

The news, which is reported in Mansfield’s local paper ‘The Chad’ is the first signing of the summer for Silkmen boss Keith Alexander.

Bell, who hails from Cheshire, began his career at Crewe where he made 63 appearance. He helped the Railwaymen to promotion from League One in his first season after coming through the ranks, including an 8-0 demolition of Doncaster in the Johnssons Paints Trophy.

Although injury slowed his appearances, he made more than 40 appearances for the side in their Championship seasons where he featured against Manchester United in the League Cup and helped Crewe to Championship safety.

Bell has also had loan spells at Shrewsbury, in their conference title season, two stints at Burton Albion before joining Mansfield last summer.

He played for the Stags against the Silkmen in the 5-0 defeat at Field Mill but was injured for the run-in, only returning on the final day.

Is there any truth in this rumour, as he has also been linked to at least 3 other clubs. Is he being linked soley because he is a Cheshire lad, or is there any substance?
